Description

Namibia, 1989-12. A row of white, armour-plated United Nations (UN) vehicles called Buffels, that were used by 17 Construction Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG). The vehicles were leased from the South African Defence Force (SADF). The side of the front Buffel features symbols of the UN and of a kangaroo, the latter identifying the vehicle's usage by the Australian contingent to UNTAG. The vehicles were specially designed to withstand blasts from land mines.
