Description

After four years in German prison camps, three AIF men board a truck in which they will travel to the transit air base in Belgium, and thence to Britain. Left to right: WX10001 Private (Pte) R. T. Sharp of Swanbourne, WA, taken prisoner at El Alamein; QX8988 Pte J. E. Mellor of Brisbane, Qld, taken at Derna; and NX6808 Pte Max W. Van Lubeck of Neutral Bay, NSW. Stalags 357 (in Oerbke) and XIb (in Fallingbostel), when liberated by units of the 2nd British Army, were found to be virtually Anzac prison camps. Many AIF men (some taken prisoner in Crete) and Australian and New Zealand Air Force men were freed.
