Letters relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Gerard Henderson Cowan, 2nd Squadron, Australian Flying Corps.

In his letters to his family written between 1918 and 1919, Cowan describes his experiences of serving abroad. Some of these experiences include being transferred from the 11 Australian Infantry Battalion to the Australian Flying Corps, taking part in flying training and exams, receiving instruction in machine guns, practicing turns and landings, visiting English family members, doing his first solo flights, poor weather for flying, sightseeing in nearby villages, and going to serve in France again, this time as a pilot.

This file also contains letters written from various family members to Cowan during his time in England. Gerard Henderson Cowan died of illness on 22 February 1919.
