S/7918 Jack Edward Hawtin was born in Sydney in 1925. After school he worked at Swaine's Stationery, and enlisted in the RAN aged 18. An Able Seaman, Hawtin's job was to drive the landing boats between large vessels and/or the shore.
Post-war he married pianist Norma Murray, and they bought a mixed business to run. After retiring, for many years he worked as a Volunteer Guide at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. Many of the speeches and stories offered were from his time at the ANMS, and detail people he met, and 'war stories' he researched.
Jack died in 2001.
