Laayoune, Western Sahara. The Swiss Medical Unit's compound, a contingent provided to MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara). On the right are demountable containers utilised for adminstrative and communications functions. The double stacked containers in the centre housed on the bottom floor the equivalent of a Regimental Aid Post or Treatment Room where basic day to day medical treatment was provided. The containers on the top housed the personnel from Farner Air who provided the fixed wing aircraft that enabled medical services to be provided throughout the Mission Area. The container to the left housed a fully equipped laboratory capable of performing a large range of tests including blood tests. In the background are accommodation buildings which were originally constructed for United Nations (UN) personnel, but were never made available to them.
