Oral history interview with Lieutenant Colonel Noel Young of the Australian Army, the commander of the Australian contingent deployed on Operation Paladin and Chief of Observer Group - Lebanon (OG-L) with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Interview with Dr Aaron Pegram of the Australian War Memorial at UNTSO Headquarters, Jerusalem, State of Israel, 5 November 2019. Topics include: family military history, direct entry officer scheme, Royal Military College Duntroon, Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC), 7th Combat Service Support Battalion (7CSSB) and deployment to Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI, 2003) as platoon commander, Defence Force School of Languages as Arabic linguist and posting to Jordan, deployment as operations captain with Force Support Unit 3 at Al Minhad Air Base (AMAB) in support of both Operations Catalyst and Slipper (2009), sub-unit command experience at Special Air Services Regiment (SASR) as officer commanding Logistics Support Squadron/Specialist Support Squadron and deployment with Special Operations Task Group to Afghanistan (2012-13) as S4 and S8 positions, staff college in Canada, lessons learnt throughout career and application to UN deployment, selection for Chief OG-L and mission-specific training, broad outline of Operation Paladin, UNTSO and point of difference between UNIFIL and UNDOF, ‘one mission with many responsibilities’, discussion on OG-L mission overview, dynamics of situation in southern Lebanon, activity and observations of IDF Operation Northern Shield from southern Lebanon, contact and liaison with Lebanese Armed Forces, structure of OG-L, multinational perspectives on Australians as peacekeepers, future plans after return to Australia, thoughts on the Australian War Memorial and future displays, defining mission success as Chief OG-L and Australian contingent commander.
