Description

Audio recording of Corporal ‘Roo’, the canine mascot of the Australian contingent at the Multinational Force and Observer group (MFO) at Forward Operating Base – North (FOB-N) at El Gorah in the Arab Republic of Egypt on 8 November 2019. A stray dog of an unknown breed, Roo was recovered by the Fijian battalion manning the Egypt-Gaza border crossing at Rafah, whereupon he was brought to FOB-N where he faced the prospect of euthanasia. The Australian contingent at FOB-N adopted Roo as their mascot, and in 2016, following de-sexing and inoculations, the Australian contingent commander formally approved Roo to be the official Australian contingent mascot. Promoted to corporal in early 2019, Roo is currently housed at ‘The Billabong’, the Australian contingent quarters at FOB-N at El Gorah in the Arab Republic of Egypt, where he plays a central role in maintaining morale of the Australian members quartered there.
