Letters of Ronald Henry Etherton, January - February 1944
Description
Letters relating to the Second World War service of 423088 Flight Sergeant Ronald Henry Etherton, 19 Operational Training Unit.
In letters to his sweetheart, Jean Ayre, written between January and February 1944, Etherton describes his experiences of training in the Royal Air Force as a navigator in Scotland. Some of these experiences include having a late Christmas celebration with his crew, flying in Whitley aircraft, receiving occasional oranges as a special treat, being Duty Navigator, frustrations with irregular mail, seeing films and a variety show at camp, being a navigator in high-pressure situations, training in the “sweat box” (artificial trainer), being homesick, being involved in a serious bus accident, going on leave at Aberdeen, being promoted to flight sergeant, and being tired from hard work.
In every letter, Etherton assures Jean of his love, and often writes hopefully about their future together.
Ronald Henry Etherton died while taking part in a bombing mission on 13 August 1944.
