Description

Portrait of three members of the 9th Battalion in front of the Sphinx near Mena Camp in Egypt. The central figure is Major Harry William Lee (Junior).

Major Lee enlisted on 20 August 1914, 5 days after his father, Lieutenant-Colonel Harry William Lee (Senior) had enlisted. An articled law clerk prior to enlisting, both father and son embarked from Brisbane aboard SS Omrah (A5) on 24 September 1914. After suffering from ill health Lieutenant-Colonel Lee (Senior) was discharged on 3 March 1916. Major Lee was killed in action, while in the 25th Battalion, near Vaulx-Vraucourt on 21 March 1917. He was 24 years old.
