Studio portrait of Lieutenant Commander (Lieut Cdr) Donald Maxwell Hole, HMAS Canberra. Lieut Cdr Hole enrolled in the Royal Australian Navy College on 1 January 1919. At the outbreak of Second World War, on 3 September 1939, he was serving on the HMAS Canberra as the Gunnery Officer. In the early hours of 9 August 1942, HMAS Canberra was severely damaged off Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) in a surprise attack by a powerful Japanese naval force in an action that became known as the Battle of Savo Island. Canberra was hit 24 times in less than two minutes and 84 of her crew were killed, including Lieut Cdr Hole. He was 37 years old.
