Description

Hand drawn map, traced with carbon paper from a German automobile map, used by Private Gardiner in his successful attempt to escape from Westerhalt Internment Camp, along with Private E. Evanson. Following his capture at Mocquet Farm on 22 August 1916, Gardiner tried unsuccessfully to escape over the Dutch border. Following forced labour in a coal mine, Gardiner's second attempt met with success.
