Photographs relating to 3754 Sapper George Austin Humphreys, 7th Field Company, Australian Engineers
Description
Studio portrait of 3754 Sapper (Spr) George Austin Humphreys, 7th Field Company, Australian Engineers, of Darlinghurst, NSW. The son of George and Catherine Humphreys, George enlisted on 7 August 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 30 November. On 22 October 1917, he was manning a pill-box on Westhoeke Ridge, east of Ypres when struck in the head by a nearby shell-burst. Although stretchered to the nearest dressing station, his identification discs were left behind at the pill-box and Humphreys was subsequently reported missing, presumed dead. A court of enquiry held on 3 July 1918 resolved that he died of his wounds, aged 29. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
