Studio portrait of 2306 Private Arthur Clark and 2304 Private Alfred Clark, 40th Australian Infantry Battalion. The brothers grew up in Ellendale, Tasmania, where Arthur worked as a farmer and Alfred was a labourer. They enlisted together on 21 September 1916, embarking from Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Melbourne (A16 ) on 21 October 1916. The two served together, with friends describing them as inseparable.
Alfred was 25 when he was wounded in action on 7 June 1917 at Messines Ridge. He died from the wounds later that day in the 2nd Casualty Station, France. Arthur received a shoulder wound during the same action, however he rejoined the unit on 10 June 1917. He fell ill on 3 July 1917 from valvular disease of the heart (VDH) and was sent for treatment at 11th Casualty Station, France. Arthur was 24 when he died from wounds after an air-raid strike on the facility on 7 July 1917.
