Description

The implements shown in this print are those observed or collected from Port Jackson during Nicolas Baudin's voyage in 1802. The objects are representative of those from the Gaimariagal and Gadigal peoples of the Eora Nations and include spears, baskets, clubs, an axe, shield, woomera (spear thrower), shell fishing hooks, and an oar.

This print comes from the book Voyage de decouvertes aux terres australes: fait par ordre du gouvernement, sur les corvettes le Geographe, le Naturaliste, et la goelette le Casuarina, pendant les annees 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803, et 1804: historique / redige par Peron et continue par M. Louis de Freycinet. This important book documented the voyages of Nicolas Baudin on the approval of First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte. During this expedition, some 2,500 new species of plants and animals were introduced to European botany. The first edition of this book was published in 1807, with this print originating from the 1824 edition.

This print is based off the original images created by Nicolas-Martin Petit and Charles Alexandre Lesueur. Petit originally signed up as gunner’s mate, but was re-allocated to artist after the ship’s three appointed artists left the ship on Mauritius. Lesueur was naturalist aboard the Baudin voyage. The prints were engraved by Berthelemy Roger (1767-1841).
