Description

Members of 102 Field Battery, Royal Australian Artillery, stacking up shells. The first layer of shells lie on the ground at right, while behind it, two unit members are each bringing up shells on their shoulders to add to the stack. In the centre, a tarpaulin stretched between star pickets provides a makeshift shelter against sun and rain. One of the battery's howitzers is partly visible at left. In the background at right, a plume of smoke rises from the trees, possibly marking the site of a shell burst or air strike.
