Description

Studio portrait of Australian soldiers taken during their service in Malaya, Second World War. Names are written on the back of the image: “Togo, Scotty, Dan and myself”. Two soldiers are unidentified, but were most likely part of the 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion.

NX55172 Private (Pte) Clarence ‘Tanky’ James Phillips, is identified but his position in the photo is unknown (possibly seated, on the right). A glassblower prior to enlisting on 27 June 1940, Pte Phillips died of illness on 24 September 1943, while a prisoner of war in Burma. The postcard is addressed to his wife, Thelma.

NX67449 Corporal (Cpl) Robert ‘Togo’ William Johnson is standing on the left in the image. Cpl Johnson enlisted on 17 Jan 1941, and died of illness on 2 September 1943, while a prisoner of war in Thailand.
