Description
Manuscript titled `A forgotten World War Two hero', resulting from an interview with Mr Joseph Wong, former employee of the Agriculture Research Station at Sandakan, who helped Australian prisoners of war by smuggling food to them and supplying parts for a radio receiving station in the camp at Mile Eight. The manuscript describes Mr Wong's torture and imprisonment by the Japanese after discovery of the radio station; his role in producing food for the Japanese occupation in 1941, and for the British Military Administration after liberation; meagre recognition of his help by the Australian government; and the interest shown by young Australian tourists in the Sandakan camp and `death march' to Ranau.
