Description

Collection relating to the First World War and North Russia Intervention service of 121 Captain Allan Brown, 2 Light Horse Regiment, AIF and Elope Force, North Russian Expeditionary Force, Egypt and Russia, 1915-1919.

Wallet 1 of 1 - This wallet contains postcards and letters from Captain Brown to his family, including his father Alfred Brown, his sister Edith Brown, and his mother Margaret Charlotte Brown.

Brown's letters date from 27 February 1915 to 10 June 1919, from Egypt, Malta, and Russia. Brown writes about transferring to an Australian unit with higher pay, his plans for cattle farming in the Australian Northern Territory, recreation including sightseeing, swimming, and shopping, violent sandstorms in Egypt, and his negative impressions of the Maltese.

A set of three colour postcards depicting Egyptian harem scenes. These form one letter, addressed to Brown's mother, 13 October 1915. The censored letter discusses delays to his unit and wounded personnel.

A set of 24 black and white postcards from Russia. The images depict a wide range of Russian scenes, including buildings, ships, and scenes from life in Northern Russia. The postcards are a single letter Captain Brown's father, Alfred Brown. He writes about his living conditions on his assignment in Russia, including the cost of supplies and the difficulties with Russian roads and the weather. The postcards are missing #14 in the sequence.

The wallet also includes a single typescript page describing Captain Brown's career, including his list of awards and his death in action in Russia, 20 July 1919.
