Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Matron Florence Ina MacDowell, British Red Cross, Italy, Russia, 1911-1934.

Wallet 1 of 1 – This wallet contains mixed papers relating to the work of Matron Florence MacDowell in Russia during the First World War, 1911-1934 . The papers include a set of typescript and handwritten documents in Russian. Photocopies with some handwritten English translation notes have been included, indicating that the documents were official certificates and identification cards granted to Matron MacDowell for her work as a nurse and hospital administrator. These papers date from 04 June 1916 - 29 July 1917, where dates are given. The photocopies and translation notes are undated.

Other papers include:

A card reading Boat No. 6, date unknown;
A passport issued to Miss MacDowell for her travel to Italy, 12 October 1911, later countersigned by the British Consulate at Florence (1915) and the French consulate at Florence (1915), and including a photograph of Macdowell, c.1915;
A certificate issued by the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John of Jerusalem in England, certifying that Miss MacDowell was proceeding to Russia on philanthropic work with the sanction of both organisations, 02 June 1916; and
A leather case for the above passport, date unknown.

The wallet also contains a typescript summary of Florence MacDowell's life and career, including details about her parents, Kathleen Green and Swanston Hay MacDowell, author unknown, c.1934.
