Collection relating to the Operation Solace service of 7100291 Private David James Burnett, 1 Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), Somalia, 1992-1993.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection consists of a pocket diary and paper currency related to Burnett's deployment to Somalia with 1RAR in 1993. The diary contains regular entries from 28 December 1992 to 24 May 1993. Burnett describes his training and preparations for deployment to Somalia, arrival in Mogadishu then Baidoa, duties such as patrols, pickets, weapon searches, convoy protection and the escorting of aid workers to outlying villages. He also writes of encounters with bandits, recreation, the arrival of mail, the death of "Mack" [Lance Corporal Shannon McAliney], leave in Mombasa, and his return to Australia. The collection also includes seven notes of Somali currency, in dominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 shillings.
