Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, Sydney. Front view of the Shirley Memorial [Sphinx Memorial], a 1/8th size replica of the Sphinx carved from solid rock by a returned soldier, 5756 Private William Thomas Shirley. two replica pyramids are out of view. Private Shirley, formerly a member of the 13th Battalion was severely gassed during the war. He completed the sculpture over a period of approximately 18 months during 1925-1926, while he was a patient in Lady Davidson Home. He died on 27 August 1929 at the age of 53. (Donor J. Walters)
