Loading ballot boxes
Description
Depicts a member of the Cambodian People's Armed Force and a Malaysian United Nations officer loading a full ballot box into an Australian Black Hawk helicopter. Gittoes documented the elections while accompanying Australians as part of the UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority) mission in Cambodia. Polling for the elections was held over a six day period commencing 23 May 1993. On the second day, Gittoes accompanied the soldiers to a number of polling stations. He noted; 'Early start on Black Hawks [helicopters] to collect ballot boxes. Collected boxes from 4 villages. A Malaysian soldier came in chopper as it was the Malays who controlled the ballot boxes in all 4 villages'.
