Description
A barrage balloon on loan from the US 7th Air Force aloft over the 1st Australian Task Force (ATF) base. The three black dots are PRC25 radio communications sets tethered beneath the balloon. The aim in attaching the radio equipment to the balloon was to increase the distance over which communications could be maintained with Special Air Services (SAS) units operating in the field. The method was devised by the Field Operational Research Section (FORS).
