Description
Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey, c. 1915-05. The original grave of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) George Frederick Braund, Commanding Officer (CO) of the 2nd Battalion, 1st AIF. The inscription on the cross reads: "L. Col G. F. Braund, 2 Bn, 4-5-15, NSW, AIF." Lt Col Braund came from Neutral Bay in Sydney and was a Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. He was accidentally killed by an Australian sentry on 1915-05-04 when he failed to respond to the sentry's challenge. The crude cross marking the burial site was later replaced by a neater cross and inscription, and the grave itself was tidied up.
