Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey, c. 1915-05. The graves of Major Walter White Ellis (left), second-in-command of 13th Battalion, 1st AIF, and of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) George Frederick Braund, Commanding Officer (CO) of the 2nd Battalion. The inscription on Major Ellis's cross reads: "In memory of Major W. Ellis, 13th Bn, killed in action May 2nd 1915." The inscription on Lt Col Braund's reads: "Lt Colonel G. F. Braund, VD, commanding 2nd Battalion, AIF, killed in action May 4, 1915." Lt Col Braund came from Neutral Bay in Sydney and was a Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. He was accidentally killed by an Australian sentry when he failed to respond to the sentry's challenge. Major Ellis came from Hamilton, NSW.
