Goodenough Island, D'Entrecasteaux Islands, Papua, 1944-04-01. Interior of the airmen's ward of No. 5 Medical Receiving Station at the Headquarters of No. 71 Wing RAAF. The ward is a thatched hut with a floor of compressed earth. Sick and injured airmen are lying on the ward's simple wooden-framed beds. At right, a Medical Officer (MO) with a stethoscope around his neck conducts a ward round, accompanied by a nurse. A table in the centre of the room has a lower shelf which holds a number of books for the patients to read.
