Description

Studio portrait of 1501 Trooper (Trp) Robert Herbert Morley, 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment. A framer prior to enlisting on 28 June 1915, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Palermo (A56) on 29 October 1915. His younger brother, 1494 Private Charles Victor Clyde Morley, embarked on the same ship and also joined the 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment. Both Robert and Charles took part in the charge at Beersheba, in Palestine. Robert was killed in action during the charge, on 31 October 1917. He was 26 years old.

The Morley family experienced great loss during the First World War. Five siblings died in Australia due to ill–health. Two other brothers were killed fighting in France and the Middle East. Private George Thomas Morley was killed with the 26th Battalion in early August 1916, and Private Edward Ernest Morley, serving with the 21st Battalion, died of wounds received at Bullecourt in May 1917. Archie, who had served with Edward in the 21st Battalion, returned to Australia after being wounded in 1917, and Charlie returned to Australia on compassionate grounds in 1918.
