NORFORCE Macassan Beach
This monumental drawing is composed of 5 panels of one-to-one scale wax pigment rubbings of personnel and equipment of NORFORCE’s Arnhem Squadron. It was created at Macassan Beach located in the Nhulunbuy region on the Gove Peninsula, East Arnhem Land and finished in Howard’s studio in Sydney over a period of three years.
Visible are a six wheeled G-Wagon, a zodiac inflatable boat and patrolmen as well as aspects of the environment the Unit operates in. It is created using an aesthetic /technique Howard describes as “Integrity of Realism”, a realism formed by his direct-media technique of working one-to-one scale, on location and within the real time operation of the subject. The work is one of two and was specifically created for the National Collection to represent the Australian Air Force, Australian Army and Australian Navy in their ongoing role with Operation Resolute.
