France, 1917-09-17. Informal group portrait of the "die hards", as they called themselves, of 2nd Section, 4th Australian Machine Gun Company, with one of the unit's Vickers machine guns. They were members of the company who had served in Egypt in 1916. Left to right: back row: 2343 Corporal (Cpl) R. C. Burridge, Geelong, VIC, killed in action 1917-09-24; 3150 Lance Cpl (L/Cpl) B. J. Jamieson, Footscray, VIC; 2359 L/Cpl W. S. Caulfield, Mentone, VIC; 1381 Driver L. H. King, Kerang, VIC; 2785 L/Cpl H. L. Andrews, Coburg, VIC. Front row: 2107 Private L. V. Atkins, TAS; 3129 Private H. P. Hammill (?), Scotland; 3060 Sergeant Thomas Robinson Lydster MM, Northcote, VIC. Little more than a week later, Sergeant Lydster was to win a bar to his MM.
