Pattern 1903 haversack GS Mk I : Australian Imperial Force
Pattern 1903 canvas haversack constructed with a front and back panel, joined with a continuous side and base strip. There is a flapped stud closure pocket at the proper left side. The haversack has a twill webbing strap which is joined to both sides at the top. At the proper right is an adjustible metal keeper. The back panel forms an elongated flap to close the bag. The closure is a single metal stud and two stitched buttonholes. Written in blue pen on the inside of the flap is 'Mac'. Below stamped in black is '1408' and in blue is '1708'.
Pattern 1903 haversack GS Mk I introduced 19 August 1903. It includes a small pocket on the side for an emergency ration. This haversack was later replaced by the pattern 1908 haversack which was primarily used during the First World War, however some servicemen took the pattern 1903 haversack with them to the front.
