Hinchinbrook Island, QLD, c. 1944-03. Members of the Australian Chemical Warfare Research and Experimental Section lined up on parade on a beach. The group includes: Dr A. Hugh Ennor (extreme left, front row), Australian Army, physiologist (later Professor of Biochemistry at the Australian National University); Captain Howard Skipper (2nd from left, front row), US Army, biochemist and physiologist; Mr Frank Pasquill (3rd from left, front row), a British meteorologist; Lieutenant Frederick S. (Freddie) Gorrill (5th from left, front row), Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), physiologist and Commanding Officer; Lieutenant (Lt) Simonson (6th from left, front row), a member of one of the Australian Army's women's services; Mr Clifford H. Purkis (back row, directly behind Lt Simonson), a British research chemist; Mr P. R. Weldon (back row, 2nd from right), Chairman of the Experimental and Research Committee, Chemical Defence Board, Department of Defence. The unit, later to be known as the 1st Field Trials Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), carried out research on the effects of mustard gas and other chemical warfare agents.
