Description

Collection relating to the United Nations Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ), Operation Bel Isi, United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), and United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) service of Sergeant David Harry Savage, Australian Federal Police, Mozambique 1994, Bougainville 1998, East Timor 1999, 2001-2002.

Wallet 1 of 4 - Consists of two folders containing maps, documents and newsletters related to Savage's deployments to Mozambique in 1994 and on Operation Bel Isi in Bougainville in 1998. The ONUMOZ material (folder 1) consists of three maps of Mozambique, which include annotations on district boundaries, inaccessible roads, and locations of possible land mines. The Bougainville material (folder 2) includes 29 May and 12 June 1998 editions of "Nius Blong Peace", the newsletter of the Peace Monitoring Group (PMG), a double-sided leaflet in English and Tok Pisin on the dangers of drinking home brew, and a certificate awarded to Savage in recognition of his service with the PMG on Bougainville from 24 April to 17 June 1998.

Wallet 2 of 4 - Consists of two folders containing correspondence between Savage and his family while he was deployed with UNAMET from June to September 1999. Folder 1 includes two typed and two faxed letters Savage wrote to his wife and children. He discusses the voter registration process, his work at Balibo, in the operations room at Maliana, and investigating violent incidents, and writes of missing his family and the rugby league results in Australia. Folder 2 contains a faxed letter from Savage's wife Sandra on home news, a typed poem entitled "Sleep" on the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia in 1975, and a card and letter from Savage's parents. They write of their difficulties in phoning him, home news, the latest rugby league results, and actively monitoring news on East Timor.

Wallet 3 of 4 - Consists of official documents, reports and ephemera related to Savage's deployment with UNAMET from June to September 1999. The wallet includes Savage's copy of the ADF East Timor Handbook, issued during pre-deployment training, and a pocket flip book containing a map of East Timor, language reference guide on Tetum and Bahasa Indonesia, and a guide to Indonesian military ranks. The wallet also includes a flyer, in Tetum and Bahasa Indonesia, on voting for autonomy or independence, Savage's copy of an Indonesian police report regarding his being interviewed for displaying the Australian flag in Maliana, and a photocopy of four pages from a notebook concerning a violent incident at Tapos in June 1999.

Wallet 4 of 4 - Consists of official documents and ephemera related to Savage's deployment with UNTAET from 2001 to 2002. The wallet includes an A4 "All Road Access" notice/sign for the Australian delegation at the Timorese independence celebrations, one UNAMET and two UNTAET decals, and Savage's copy of the booklet "Australian Federal Police in East Timor".

Folio 1 of 2 - Consists of four posters related to ONUMOZ, collected during Savage's service in Mozambique in 1994. The folio includes a ONUMOZ election poster, a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR/ACNUR) land mine warning poster, and two UNHRC/ACNUR explosive ordnance educational posters.

Folio 2 of 2 - Consists of five posters related to UNAMET and UNTAET, collected during Savage's service in East Timor. The folio includes a double-sided United Nations election poster ("Segredu!" recto; "Rahasia" verso), two UNTAET information posters, and two UNAMET election posters.
