Description
Studio portrait of 23045 Private Arthur Parsonage Scarfe, 1st Australian Wireless Signal Squadron, AIF. A junior assistant engineer of Newcastle, NSW, Pte Scarfe enlisted on 26 November 1917, at age 19. He required written permission to enlist from his parents due to his young age. He was promoted to Sapper in January 1918, and commenced Wireless Training School at Moore Park on 13 January 1918, and embarked from Sydney on 14 September 1918. Sapper Scarfe served with 1st Wireless Signal Squadron until his return to Australia in April 1919. His portrait is inscribed in the lower right, "Yours sincerely, Arthur Scarfe."
