Description

One of a series of commissioned photographs by Tasmanian Aboriginal photographer Ricky Maynard. Documentary photographer Maynard, of the Cape Portland and Ben Lomond People, was born in Launceston, Tasmania, and lives and works on Cape Barren Island. In 2019, The Australian War Memorial’s Photographs, Film and Sound Section, working in consultation with the Art Section, approached Maynard about a commissioned series of photographs, which would be created on the Furneaux Islands. The commission saw Maynard document the enduring legacy of the First World War military service of Aboriginal peoples from Cape Barren and Flinders Islands. Each portrait of a soldier’s descendant highlights the enduring connection to their ancestors, the land and the impact of military service on their community.
