Palestine Pound souvenir portrait: NX43965 Private William Diaho Enares
A souvenir 'Palestine Pound' incorporating two photographic portraits, one of serviceman NX43965 William Diaho Enares and the other a female [relative or friend, possibly his mother as he was listed as single on his attestation form]. William Enares was born in Tweed Heads, NSW, a second generation South Sea Islander.
William Enares was one of the men and women of Indigenous and South Sea Islander heritage who fought for their country during the Second World War. He enlisted in the Second AIF at Eungella, northern New South Wales, on 29 August 1941 as a private in the Machine Gun Training Battalion. As part of the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion, 6th Division, he served in Palestine, Syria, New Guinea and Borneo. William Enares was discharged on 15 March 1946.
