Papers of Maude Elizabeth Edmondson relating to the life and Second World War service of NX15705 Corporal John Hurst "Jack" Edmondson, 2/17 Battalion, Australia and Libya, 1916-1956.

Wallet 2 of 4 contains two folders.

Folder 1 of 2 contains a telegram, dated 26 April 1941, from the Minister for the Army Percy Claude Spender to Joseph William Edmondson informing him that his son, Corporal John Hurst Edmondson, was killed in action on 14 April 1941. Corporal Edmondson was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in a counter-attack against enemy troops at Tobruk including saving the life of his Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Frederick Austin Mackell. Collection also contains another telegram from Minister Spender to Mr Edmondson regarding the King's approval of the award. Collection also includes 19 condolence letters and other correspondence from various friends and relatives, members of the Australian Army, Jack's former teacher at Hurlstone Agricultural High School, civic and ecclesiastical dignitaries, clubs and societies.
