Egypt, c. 1915-02. Members of a Machine Gun Section of the 1st AIF training in the desert with .303-inch Maxim machine guns. The soldiers are, left to right: Corporal (Cpl) King; Cpl Frederick James Pengelly; Sergeant Rowley (standing at rear); Lance Cpl Jones; Private Blackburn. King and Jones are wearing "MG" badges on their sleeves, indicating that they are machine gun instructors. Jones is wearing an Australian 1915 pattern leather belt which was being trialled at that time. The ammunition boxes are an early style of equipment, soon to be replaced.
