Description
Palmietfontein, Cape Province, South Africa, c. 1900-01. A group of black South Africans serving with the British forces and, behind them, three cooks from an Army Medical Corps unit with one of the Australian contingents to the Boer War. The black soldier at extreme left is using a small axe to chop a length of wood, probably for the cooking fire. The man next to him is playing an accordion and the other three blacks are peeling potatoes. In the background are the tents of a sizable military encampment.
