Outdoors portrait of some members of a rifle company of the 42nd Battalion. From left to right, back row: 2288 Corporal (Cpl) Leslie James Clacher; 1811 Private (Pte) William Thomas Beech; 2065 Lance Corporal (later Sergeant) Philip Spencer Day MM; 964 Cpl Ernest Dudley Travers; 1793 Cpl William Leonard Vance. Front row: 2029 Cpl John Thomas Allen; Captain Robert Stuart Rankin (Commanding Officer); 2079 Company Quartermaster Sergeant Frederick Geise. A number of the soldiers are wearing greatcoats to keep warm. All men returned to Australia at the end of the war.
