Description
Germany. 1943-10-09. This photograph (taken by 411742 Warrant Officer K. G. Campbell) bears witness to the weight and concentration of RAF Bomber Command's attacks on Hanover, important armaments and communications centre between the Ruhr and Berlin. A Lancaster (bottom left) can be seen silhouetted against the glow of thousands of incendiary bombs and fires burning in the district south south-east of Hanover's main station on the night of 1943-10-08/09. So clearly are many of the main streets picked out in this great saturation of fire that exact identification of the locality presented no problem to the photographic interpreters.
