Ellis, James (Sapper, b.1868 - d.1947)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 549 Sapper James Ellis (birth name Hillis), 2nd Tunnelling Company, France, 1916-1917.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of five letters from Ellis to his niece, Irene Rooney ('Rena'), written between 13 January 1916 and 13 March 1917. He describes his day to day experiences in France, mentions the introduction of new German machinery, and writes of comparisons made by other Australian soldiers between the conditions on Gallipoli and those on the Western Front. The collection also contains one illustration entitled 'A Comparison!', sent by Ellis to his family. The illustration, signed by A. Stone, depicts Australian soldiers in training and in combat, and compares the ironically differing instructions between both scenes.
