Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 3275 Sergeant Reginald Arthur Hind MM & Bar, 6th Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC).
Wallet 1 of 1 - consists of: a pocket diary with daily entries for 30 April to 31 December 1915 recording his training at Broadmeadows Victoria, and service in the Middle East, on Gallipoli (4 September to 12 December 1915) and on Lemnos. On Gallipoli, especially around Brown's Dip and Scott's Pine, he describes his duties as a stretcher bearer, bombardments including aircraft attacks, conditions in the dugouts, the importance to him of church parades and the evacuation; a pocket diary with entries from January to August 1917 kept while serving in France with mention of his duties as an Orderly Sergeant and while working in dressing stations; a Field Message Book, undated but probably 1917, with personnel lists and sketch maps of Polygon Wood and around Ypres; New Testament Bible, 1913, with short annotations and a note re the notification of his Military Medal. Sgt Hind was awarded the Military Medal on 9 August 1917 for his great gallantry as a stretcher bearer at Pozieres, and his Bar for gallantry and conspicuous devotion to duty at Polygon Wood.
