Portrait of an Aboriginal serviceman, 7745 Private (Pte) Jack McAlister, a stockman from Charters Towers, Queensland. who enlisted in the AIF 21 July 1917. Pte McAlister embarked in Sydney on HMAT Euripides 31 October 1917 with the 20th Reinforcements. He was sent as a reinforcement to France and taken on strength by the 9th Battalion 1 May 1918. On 3 February 1919 he was appointed as a Driver and likely worked as a driver in France until he was sent to England to return to Australia. Driver McAlister sailed from England on board HMAT Nestor and was dischared after arriving in Australia 18 November 1919. On his attestation form he listed his nationality as, "British born Half Cast". Jack McAlister was living in Cairns in 1958 when he sought the assistance of the RSL to write to the Army to replace his lost Statement of Service and to issue his medals.
