Description

A crater caused by the first German jet propelled aircraft crash which occurred at Nijmegen on 5 October 1944. The aircraft, an ME 262 (Werk Nummer 170093) flown by Hauptmann (Captain) Hans-Christoff Buttmann 3./KG 51 (3 Staffel, Kampfgeschwader 51) was hit several times before diving into the ground. His aircraft was shot down by Canadian pilots of No. 401 Sqn, RAF. Although Hauptmann Buttmann bailed out prior to impact, his parachute failed to open and he was killed as a result. This is the first recorded air to air combat downing of an Me 262. Royal Engineers are preparing to pump out the water so that RAF experts may examine any part of the jet propulsion units they find.
