Description
Corinth, Greece. C. 1944-11. This mosaic, comprised of photographs taken by aircraft of an RAF Middle East Photo Reconnaissance Unit, shows how the Germans blocked the Corinth Canal in an attempt to render it impassable to our shipping and transport. An inactive merchant vessel from Piraeus, the SS "Vesta" of 3350 tons, was sunk across the southern entrance to the Corinth Canal. Both road and rail bridges over the canal were destroyed and the canal blocked by two landslides. One bridge had been recently constructed by the Germans and had only just come into use. In addition, two pontoon bridges at the northern end were destroyed, piers were blown up and ferries sunk.
