Description
Tha Mayo Cemetery (also known as Tamajo and Tamajau), containing Australian "A" Force prisoner of war (POW) graves. The inscription on the cross in the foreground reads: "NX24738 .... Pte Mooney L. Age 40. AIF. Died 13.11.44". The burial party appear to have mistaken Pte Mooney's age, as both his service record and Roll of Honour entry document his death from illness at 36 years. The War Graves Commission survey party's task was to locate POW cemeteries and grave sites along the Burma-Thailand railway. They also took the opportunity to recover equipment and documents which had been secretly buried, under instructions from senior POW officers, in the graves of deceased POWs.
