Description

Osnabruck, Germany. 1945-03-25. Over 600 Lancaster and Halifax aircraft of RAF Bomber Command attacked the three main railway centres of Munster, Osnabruck and Hanover, which serve the German armies facing Field Marshal Montgomery's 21st Group. The bombers were escorted by many fighters of RAF Fighter Command. This striking photograph shows cumulus cloud forming 18,000 feet above burning Osnabruck, after the attack by RAF Bomber Command. A huge column of smoke rose into the sky and heat from the fires which were started in this railway centre caused the cumulus cloud to form.
