Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No 1 Mk III Rifle : Volunteer Defence Corps
Description
SMLE No I Mk III Rifle. Receiver marked with Lithgow SHT LE III within a shield and 1915. Barrel has the date 4'33 and the rifle serial number on the knox form. The wood fore-end has been modified to the Mk III* and to accomodate the fixed rear block sight made by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory. The butt is stamped VDC 35582. The volley sights have been removed but the magazine cut off plate is fitted to the receiver.

This rifle is one of the weapons made up by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory during the early part of World War Two as an emergency issue to the Volunteer Defence Corps.
