Description

Collection relating to the Commonwealth Monitoring Force service of 840029 Sergeant (later Captain) Peter Markham King, Rhodesia, 1979-1980.

Wallet 1 of 2 - Consists of King's military identity card, diary, and an essay (containing extracts from the diary) of his experiences while serving with the Commonwealth Monitoring Force/Commonwealth Liaison, Advisory and Monitoring Organisation in Rhodesia [now Zimbabwe] from 1979 to 1980. The diary contains regular entries from 1 January to 5 March 1980. King writes of daily activities and events, working with Lieutenant Jim Truscott, the scale of the violence in his district, weapons confiscation, the elections, and his interactions with "CTs" ["communist terrorists"; members of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army and Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army].

Wallet 2 of 2 - Consists of two folders, containing documents, ephemera and serials related to the Commonwealth Monitoring Force. Folder 1 includes: a copy of N.J. Brendon's "The Man -- And His Ways" (1969); a December 1981 copy of the Legion Journal (page 27 of which contains a photograph of King and Lieutenant Jim Truscott in Rhodesia); an election leaflet for James Chikerema; and an information leaflet on the British South Africa Police Support Unit (known as the "Blackboots"). Folder 2 contains issues 1 to 7 and 9 of the "Pangolin Times", the soldiers' newsletter of the Commonwealth Monitoring Force. The newsletters cover matters of interest to the deployed personnel, current news, anecdotes, and cartoons.
