Description
Barmera, South Australia. 1945-12. Rabbit breeding pits made by Japanese internees in 14B Compound of No 14 Camp in the Loveday Internment Camp Group. The internees supplemented their rations by breeding hundreds of rabbits in burrows radiating from the sides of the pits. Hard limestone under the surface prevented the animals from burrowing out. The Japs also appreciate a nicely fattened cat as an addition to their diet.
